Días 1 y 2: Nelson - Parque Nacional Abel Tasman - Hokitika
Día 1:

Día 1: Nelson hasta Abel Tasman
Hoy aterrizamos en la isla sur, concretamente en Nelson. Volamos con la compañía Air New Zealand desde la isla norte; son avionetas que te llevan a varios puntos del país. Lo curioso es que para embarcar no te piden documentación ni tienes que pasar por los controles de la policía.
Al llegar a Nelson, nos recogieron nuestros amigos con la caravana y empezamos la ruta. Lo primero era parada obligatoria para comprar en el Pak’nSave de Nelson (el supermercado más barato de Nueva Zelanda con mucha diferencia). De ahí fuimos lo más cerca posible del Parque Nacional Abel Tasman, y queríamos un camping gratis, así que nos quedamos en Motueka.
Nos duchamos en el Recreation Center de Motueka, que está muy bien y por 5 NZ$ tuvimos una ducha de agua caliente estupenda.
Muy cerca encontramos un camping gratis super bonito pegado a la playa llamado Motueka Beach Reserve. Tiene baños, duchas gratis (frías), barbacoas eléctricas, muchas mesas de picnic y hasta una piscina “natural” justo al lado. Desafortunadamente cuando llegamos estaba lleno, pero nos gustó tanto el sitio que decidimos cenar ahí y ver el atardecer.

Para dormir fuimos al otro camping gratis en el centro de la ciudad llamado Decks Reserve Carpark (aparcamiento habilitado en la ciudad con baños gratis).
Día 2: Visita Abel Tasman y continuamos a Hokitika

Parque Nacional Abel Tasman
Hoy tocaba uno de los días fuertes del viaje, visitar el Parque Nacional Abel Tasman. Este fue creado en 1942 para conmemorar los 300 años de la expedición de Abel Tasman, marino y explorador neerlandés (en realidad cuentan que fue una lucha con el pueblo maorí indígena, con víctimas por ambas partes y Abel Tasman no llegó ni a tocar tierra).
Este día tuvimos mucha suerte porque el cielo estaba totalmente despejado. Lo primero que hicimos fue conducir media horita hasta llegar al inicio de la ruta, el pueblo de Marahau.
Para ver Abel Tasman, al ser muy largo y lineal, se suele reservar un water taxi, que te puede dejar y recoger en diferentes puntos (no es nada barato así que hay que elegir bien el trayecto). Si tienes varios días para visitar este parque, hay varios camping en los que quedarte durante el camino, concretamente nos gustó mucho el Camping de Anchorage (tiene opción de reservar literas sin necesidad de llevar tu tienda de campaña, y tiene unas vistas espectaculares). Hay mucha gente que tiene días de sobra y hace la ruta durante varios días. Unos compañeros lo hicieron en 4 días y nos dijeron que estuvo muy bien.
Fuimos al centro de información a reservar el water taxi, pero nos encontramos que los de las primeras horas de la mañana estaban todos llenos. Por lo tanto, si queréis que todo siga según lo que habéis planeado, tratar de reservar unos días antes el water taxi.
Nosotros decidimos hacer la ruta de manera inversa, es decir, empezar desde el pueblo andando y que el water taxi nos recogiera en Anchorage. Costó 52NZ$ por persona el trayecto de vuelta del water taxi.


La ruta fue espectacular, muy fácil, el camino muy bien señalizado y durante el trayecto hay varios desvíos cortos para bajar a las diferentes playas. Tardamos en llegar 4 horas, y por supuesto para finalizar la ruta, hubo un chapuzón en la maravillosa playa de Anchorage.
Recomendamos recorrer esta playa caminando entera, sobre todo la parte opuesta al camping, ya que cuando baja la marea y puedes ir por debajo de las rocas, ¡parece que estás en el caribe!
💥TIP: también está la opción de hacer la ruta con tour en kayak. La verdad que tenía muy buena pinta, y creemos que si te hace buen día, puede merecer más la pena hacerlo así.

Hokitika y Glow Worm Caves
A la vuelta, condujimos 4 horas hasta llegar a Hokitika. Llegamos ya de noche y aprovechamos para ver los famosos Glow Worm de Hokitika. Son unos gusanos luminiscentes que suelen estar en las cuevas. Hay que ir de noche, en silencio y con alguna linterna (sirve el móvil), en 2 minutos desde el aparcamiento ya los podrás ver. Quedamos impresionados, había muchísimas luces, era espectacular, y lo mejor de todo, gratis!. Este es uno de los mejores puntos para verlos del país y sin duda merece la pena acercarse si no pasas muy lejos.
Antes de llegar al camping paramos a ducharnos junto a una gasolinera por 5NZ$. Todo muy limpio y recomendable, se llamaba Wicked Spin Laudromart.
Dormimos en uno de los camping del estado (son los llamados DOC: Department Of Conservation) al lado de un lago precioso, y con baños públicos en muy buen estado: Lake Mahinapua Campsite (no hay nadie cuando llegas para cobrarte, se reserva por internet y es muy barato).
